Biography

“You just don’t become a leader in one year. You’re prepped for it. When you’re at your lowest—but you got that faith—that gives you motivation. And when you have that motivation, that’s what makes you a leader,” says Las Vegas native Dizzy Wright. Beyond his years at 22, Dizzy has been one of the first Sin City rappers to grab the spotlight and carry it across the globe.

“My mom kicked me out when I was 17,” Dizzy reveals of the woman who both raised him and managed his career since childhood, “I was thrown out into the world.” With a similar story to his inspiration, Tupac Shakur, he took to local clubs to build a network and fan-base by being both skilled and flashy. “I was all about getting people to know my name. I knew the vision, but I didn’t know the gesture. You’ve got to live through this to get an understanding of it.” Along the way, Wright says that life taught him to keep a tight circle and to be concerned with how his music sounded in venues just as much as the writing. That dichotomy of substance and swagger has made Dizzy Wright an independent charting sensation with three 2012 releases, SmokeOut Conversations (along with the 200,000 times downloaded promotional mixtape), as well as a follow-up EP, The First Agreement. In turn, the youngest member of Funk Volume has been one of the most active.

Although SmokeOut Conversations could be dismissed as just marijuana music, the inspiration behind the concept is deeply personal to Dizzy. The rapper asserts, “I didn’t want people to perceive me as this weed rapper with a weed album.” Instead, he admits that a key moment in creating the album came from his first encounter with his father. “I did a show in Detroit with Hopsin, and I got to meet my father for the first time. I was trying to figure out what he was gonna be like. He went to jail a couple months before I was born, and then he got out 20 years later.” To buffer the circumstances, Dizzy and his Pops eased tensions with some help. “When I finally met him, all we did was smoke and talk.” “We just got to do a lot of catchin’ up, lotta talkin’, and lotta smokin’.” After his father traveled to several dates with the Funk Volume family, Dizzy left the experience with a title and theme for his debut album.

The independent album produced two multimillion-view videos on YouTube, “Solo Dolo” and “Can’t Trust Em.” Dizzy was specific in giving his expanding base both sides of his repertoire. The first was Dizzy’s most personal record, while the second had, what he calls “that now-sound.” Both resonated, and the rapper was able to go from “doing shows to doing concerts” in his relentless touring with label-mates. Reflecting, he notes, “I was just testing the waters.” Ready to fully jump in, Wright promises of his forthcoming work, “My next album will be the biggest one to date. It’ll be the perfect material for the fans, ‘cause I understand everything a lot more.”

Like his idol, Dizzy Wright embodies a do-for-self journey that’s magnetized listeners with his natural charisma. Perhaps with a cloudy chorus or a bassline to make it digestible, he’s leading a new charge. “’Pac’s passion gives me passion. I don’t wanna be just one of these niggas just talkin’.” In life and in music, already he’s saying much more.

I’m a 15 year old, African American male from New York. I’ve been listening to FV for some time now. First off, I’m not writing this for anyone but Dizzy ( I know that FV actually pays attention to their fans, so I come here to reach him.) But Honestly, Diz has became a father figure in my life since the first lyric I heard him speak. I understand him. And I want him to know (if uncertain) that he is reaching the youth. We do see him. So please, keep shining.

Man, where do i start, ever since last november ive listened to nothing but funk volume, dizzy d is the first i heard and his words spoke to me in such a strong way that i began to idolize him. i was homeless for 3 months after i got out of dealing drugs (meth, oxycottons, coke at times) and i felt i had it made during those times counting nearly 20,000 bills each week. While i was working through and getting past my addiction to meth and oxys as an everyday thing, i had my headphones in every second of everyday listening to the first agreement, smokeout conversations and soul searchin until i memorized every word to each song. when the homies wanted to chill and toke, id grab my ihome, throw it in the bag and walk around listening to his music. Everything dizzy has said in his music has spoke to me in some sort of way. before, i had no religion, i didnt believe in the power of god, and day by day, listening and taking in the words he put into his music. i began to find God and realize he is true and will always be the one person whos there for me. shortly after, i had my first pregnancy scare with my ex and man, i was scared, im 16 years old and this was a week after my birthday, after that got cleared up, i moved back into my grandmas house where my dad was staying and not even 48 hours later child services was at my door taking my two baby sisters away. Everything seemed to be falling apart every which way this last year.. and just the other day my ex told me she was pregnant. today, she told me she not anymore, i will never forgive her for killing my seed, i wont ever be able to know what that child could have been and it kills me because i got her pregnant and i wanted this baby after i found out. i wanted full custody of that child. shit, i may be 16 but i know damn well id be the greatest father there ever was. id give that child what i never had which was a dad, he was always to busy using crank in the bathroom while i was changing my sisters diapers and making their bottles and dinner in the 6th and 7th grade.. Fact of the matter is, i look up to dizzy More than i do my own parents, hes motivated and gotten me through so many hard and horrible periods of my life just by just being open with his words through music, I respect him more than i do any other person in my life. ive never had someone to idolize but hes definitely the first and the last ill be looking up too. Keep doing what your doing man. ill always be the biggest fan you got out there. ill be seeing you oct 29 at the launchpad in albuquerque New Mexico. Shows gonna be vibin! Thanks for taking your time with your music and keeping me from letting myself go. you may not realize how many lives you effect (positively) by making your music but damn, you changed my life in 100 different ways. its amazing how you can save a life just by taking a piece of time out of your day to write some words down and speak them to a beat.

  20. Sebastian July 25, 2013 at 4:48 pm #

I really hope Dizzy see’s this..

I am an 19 year old from New Zealand. I first discovered Dizzy by a chance encounter with the ‘Hit me when you’re coming” video, and was a fan from day 1.
Never have i felt so familiar with any artist in my life.. not in the sense that we live similar life styles but due to the fact that from the first time i listen to a dizzy song i knew the intention in the music was pure.. I hope he one day realises how much he has helped me. By reinforcing ideals that i have been discovering on this crazy path we call life.

I just want to thank you Dizzy, whether you know it or not your soul illuminates positivity more so than any other rapper i have ever heard. There is no need to say stay true or anything because it is so obvious to see you know yourself but are so willing to continue learning.

Peace be with you man and if you are ever performing in New Zealand, I will be there :D

Just somethin a Dizzy Wright song inspired me to write.
Sometimes thinkin bout your memories can be your biggest enemy,
All the fake faces that said you got a friend in me but eventually, there’ll be a day they never see and thats the day i will evolve into a better me, There’s too much stress, it’s hard to let it go, gotta make these dollars stretch, and they wonder why we blow, because we all fight battles, we all shed tears, they try to herd us up like cattle but through the worst we persevere, everybody’s out for thereself, all they care about is wealth, more money than they can spend and they see poor kids and still wont help, they wonder our generations full of mad teens, because a lot of their parents are meth or crack fiends, stupid ass government, god damn ive had enough of it, but fuck it i might as well just take another hit and focus on some other shit.

Hey I just wrote this inspirational piece inspired by one of your old songs, “Wake Up”
    http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/1977049-Wake-Up-Everybody
For some reason I like your old work better than your new. You’re one of the few rappers who still speak the truth. I mean I like World Peace and Killem Wit Kindness. But what was all that other stuff on Golden Age. I guess, what I’m trying to say is, I liked your work better before you joined Funk Volume, Like Soul Searchin Next Level type stuff. But then again, you do have a squad their at Funk Volume and you shouldn’t give that up.

Dizzy, when I first heard smokeout conversations I told all my friends that you were the shit and since they were only into media rap, they told me that you weren’t worth listenin to. Look at you now! I laugh in their faces as I listen to your songs now. When I’m blazin, I’m lighten it up to your flows, when I’m down and shuttin everyone out, I’m pluggin you in. It’s crazy how much you can do with a pen and a pad. I was gonna see you in last September in Seattle but my mom went to the hospital the night before and you know how it is, family over everything. I was just gonna see if maybe you could let me send a few of my notebooks over for you to look at? It’d mean THE WORLD to me. Well thanks Dizzy and keep doin your thing.

  87. Damon April 14, 2014 at 8:00 pm #

I don’t know if Dizzy really reads this but if you do I wanted to ask a question. My name is Damon but I go by Angelo, I just turned 18, live in colorado springs co and have a baby on the way. I see it as a blessing and am very excited/nervouse. Now to start my question I want to explain we’re I’m coming from, I was raised in church and was always told that I’m different and special. Now it never really ment much at first cuz I seen it as I’m a kid and that’s what adults say to kids. Once I started doing my own thing experiencing life I continued to hear that I’m special and how I have a glow inside me. That’s when I new I was different, people in all places of all types seen something in me. I just turnd 18 April 3rd and can feel that its time. I don’t no what it’s time for but it’s time. I seen you at the black sheep not to long ago and you made eye contact with me and I seen the glow everyone been talking about. I feel like we are alike and I wanted to ask if you will help me find out what it’s time for me to do. I look up to you cuz you are in such high places and didn’t need to fall into the ways of the world to do it. You have pride in being pure and I love that. I do what I need to do to live but I no I got more in me and can do MUCH BIGGER things.
